King Henry book review

Author: Douglas Galbraith
Genre: Historical fiction

Well written and, most likely, meticulously researched. That is what stops me rating this 2 stars. Because I need a plot. And this book doesn't really have one. It has a lot of characters, half of whom are interesting. But most of them don't add anything to the very thin story. And there are too many characters in the first place. If I have to go flicking back to remind myself who is who it's not a good sign. So essentially it's a character piece and in that aspect it does very well. The era comes to life quite vividly too but, and I've said this before, I need some tension. Something that makes me want to find out what happens. I could have walked away at almost any point and not felt l was missing anything. Nothing close to what is described in the blurb on the back cover happens until after the first 100 pages. But such was the level of historical detail & characterisations that I will try another of the authors books at some point, before I completely write him off.
