Into The Water book review

Author: Paula Hawkins
Genre: Mystery

Quite a let-down after (over-hyped but enjoyable) The Girl on the Train. The main issue is an over ambitious execution and an absence of objective editing, always a problem after a runaway success. There are some good ideas, but we hear from 13 different characters. It's far too many and the result is an over indulgent mess. Pity. Quite a few characters don't add anything to the story, they simply slow things down. As the book went on, I found myself caring less and less about the mystery side of the plot, due to these unnecessary distractions. But the mythology surrounding the river is one of the highlights. Perhaps you can put up with the array of characters who you'll hear from, but personally I miss the tight plotting and infectious paranoia of The Girl on the Train.
