Carthage book review

Author: Joyce Carol Oates
Genre: Fiction

This book is unlike anything else I've read. That’s not necessarily a good thing by the way. But it is powerful in its themes and emotional with its characters. Girl goes missing, fowl play is suspected. You've read that story before right? Not like this you haven't. This is an unflinching look at the trauma of a broken family and the trauma of a broken man, the father. It is very effective in getting under the skin of the characters and is well written and thorough with everything it touches upon. The characters are some of the most well rounded I've encountered, although it is challenging to like Cressida, the girl who goes missing, but that is half the point. A conventional psychological thriller this is not. It doesn't have chapters in the traditional sense, they're more like sections. But they can be very long. However, if you immerse yourself in this book, as it invites you to, you won't notice the structural anomalies so much. You will be greatly rewarded for your dedication. But if you’re a fan of traditional mystery stories, move on.
